The Cirque de Navacelles: a dizzying
hike in the heart of a listed canyon
The Cirque de Navacelles is a must-see hike and adventure for lovers of magnificent landscapes and unspoiled nature. Nestled between the Causses du Larzac and Blandas, this UNESCO-listed geological gem has been sculpted by the Vis Gorges for millennia. Whether from the viewpoints or descending towards the village, each trail offers total immersion. In addition, waterfalls, hamlets, and old mills mark a hiking route of moderate difficulty but rich in emotions. After all, this hike in the south of France remains an unforgettable memory for all hikers.
The Baume Auriol belvedere: spectacular panorama
The Baume Auriol lookout point is the best starting point for admiring the Cirque de Navacelles. Located on the Blandas side, this observation post offers a striking view of the meandering river. Next to it, a well-appointed parking lot allows easy access, even for visitors just passing through. Afterwards, a marked trail descends gently to the bottom of the cirque. The relatively short and well-maintained route is perfect for beginners. In addition, explanatory panels mark the route, adding cultural interest to the walk. Therefore, it’s an excellent choice for a first approach.
The descent into the cirque: immersion in the heart of the canyon
Suddenly, the path plunges into the bowels of the cirque, between limestone cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation. This section of the hike requires a little more effort, but it remains accessible to regular hikers. Along the way, you will come across abandoned hamlets, seasonal waterfalls, and shaded passages. The trail winds between rocks and vegetation, revealing a new panorama at every turn. At the same time, the natural silence is only disturbed by the murmur of the Vis River. Therefore, this section of the route is ideal for reconnecting with nature.
The Vis Trail:along the river and the old mills
Once at the bottom of the cirque, the trail runs alongside the Vis river for several kilometers. This flat and refreshing section is punctuated by natural waterfalls and restored old mills. Whether in summer or spring, the clear water offers a welcome break. Furthermore, the village of Navacelles, nestled at the foot of the cliffs, offers refreshment spots, perfect before the return journey. As a result, this stage combines history, nature, and relaxation. At this point, you are in the heart of the Cévennes National Park, where time seems to stand still. Finally, the return path climbs gently towards the Causse de Blandas.
